Northumberland Castles
Chillingham Castle
Originally a monastery Chillingham Castle occupied a strategically important location in medieval times being on the border of two fueding nations. In 1298 King Edward 1 stayed there on his way to battle a scottish army led by William Wallace. The castle grounds are home to the rare breed of Chillingham cattle and the castle itself is reputedly the most haunted castle in Britain.
